SUSPENSION #3: OPEN THREADS
This was a piece I made in 2005 to serve as a projection screen for video and sound installation in collaboration with composer, Ted Coffey.
Many sound sculptures and interactive sculptures have been created over the past half century, but the field of ceramics has been slow to integrate the technologies idiomatic to such exploration. Works that bring clay and sound art together are extremely rare. I am eager to increase awareness of this potential in the field of ceramic art.
Suspension #3: Open Threads (2007, 2009, 2015) is a large-scale interactive sound sculpture. This piece comprises 210 ultra-thin porcelain tiles (etched, glazed, and unglazed) ‘sewn’ together, interleaved and hanging loose -- suspended in columns, forming a ‘quilted’ ceramic screen. The sound accompanying it is based on recordings of these same tiles struck by percussion mallets at various dynamic levels. Visual elements are produced by projected video feedback, mediated by real-time computer analysis of the motion of viewer/participants.
